The versions of Windows 8 are Windows 8 Pro, Windows 8 Local Language, Windows 8 RT & finally Windows 8 Enterprise. It was released on the 26th October 2012. It is available in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions.
There will be no Windows 8 Ultimate as in the previous 2 versions of Windows. The versions to be released are: Windows 8, Windows 8 Professional, Windows 8 Local, Windows 8 Enterprise and Windows RT. Below is a brief highlight of the various operating systems.
Windows 8:
This version is for home users and will exclude features like drive encryption, group policy and virtualization. However, you will have access to the Windows Store, Live Tiles, Remote Desktop Client, VPN Client and other features.
With this version you will be able to upgrade from Windows 7 Starter, 7 Home Basic and 7 Home Premium.

Windows 8 Professional:
You will be able to upgrade from Windows 7 Starter, 7 Home Basic, 7 Home Premium, 7 Professional, and 7 Ultimate editions.

Windows 8 Local:
Windows 8 Enterprise:
Only recommended for Microsoft Partner Network, MSDN Subscription, TechNet Professional Subscription and Microsoft Volume Licensing/Software Assurance.
This will be the business edition of Windows 8 available to multiple user licences, it will be available in 32 bit and 64 bit editions for X86 processors.
You will be able to upgrade from Windows 7 Starter, 7 Home Basic, 7 Home Premium, 7 Professional, and 7 Ultimate editions.

Windows RT
This version of Windows is designed for devices powered by ARM processors. it will be pre-installed and will have no upgrade paths available to it. It actually isn't called "Windows 8 RT" its actually just simply "Windows RT".
Windows RT is dedicated to running the new fancy web enabled Metro apps.
WinRT will include the new touch screen optimized version of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote)
